Photographs documenting burial sites found during construction of the Abraham Lincoln statue on Bascom Hill, University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1918 and 1922. Photographs include general views of the excavations done in 1918 and images of two grave sites excavated in 1922. One of these graves is that of Samuel Warren, a workman on the first state capitol building, who was struck by lightning. Included are images of Warren's skeletal remains and his tombstone. The other grave is thought to be that of William Nelson. Images include photographs of his skeletal remains. Also included are two photocopies of newspaper items about the excavations. The photographs were made by E. S. Billings of Neillsville, Wis. and Arthur Vinje of Madison, Wis.
